The golden age of Turkish coffee culture flourished under Suleiman the Magnificent (Kanuni Sultan Süleyman), who ruled the Ottoman Empire during its most powerful era.
In this period, coffee became incredibly popular, with grand coffeehouses emerging as cultural hubs. However, this cultural revolution had its consequences—so much so that coffee was briefly banned, as it was seen as a distraction from work and prayer.
Despite this, Sultan Süleyman himself was an avid coffee drinker, enjoying several cups daily. He was not only a ruler but also a renowned poet, writing under the pen name “Muhibbi”, which means “one who is devoted to a friend”.
His poetic collection, or Divan, contained an astounding 2,799 ghazals (classical poems), making him one of the most prolific poets among Ottoman rulers.
Why the Name “Muhibbi” for This Collection?
The name Muhibbi was chosen for this exclusive Effendy collection as a tribute to Sultan Süleyman, his love for coffee, and the golden age of Turkish coffee culture. This collection is crafted with the same level of devotion and artistry, ensuring that every coffee lover who enjoys it becomes part of this rich heritage.
Effendy’s commitment to authentic Ottoman craftsmanship is reflected in every piece of this collection—just as Muhibbi’s poetry was a reflection of his deep devotion to art, culture, and companionship.
